Get to know George
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me and my campaign!
I’m running because I care. I care about my neighbors across the county and the beautiful environment that surrounds us. I want to strengthen and protect our communities from the pressure of Denver’s population growth and the coming budgetary issues. The decisions we make in the next four years will impact the direction of this county for the next fifty. We will be deciding what our communities and forests will look like, who will live here and what their opportunities are. I believe that we need someone who will be here during that time to ensure these issues are taken seriously and resolved in a way that strengthens our communities rather than hollowing them out. It is critical that we include as many people as possible in this process to make sure that we get it right and get it done.
My concern and interest began in earnest as a college student when I began to learn about the problems we face as a society. Wanting to work within my own community to address environmental issues, I co-founded Scraps-to-Soil. I have been working as a volunteer for this community since. My life since has been full of wide-eyed moments in awe of all the people who work to hold this community together. My interests broadened as my appreciation of the work it takes to keep a community together grew and my skillset deepened as I took on new challenges in service of this community.
At the same time, I’ve watched Clear Creek’s fortunes change due to two events: The announcement of the closure of the Henderson Mine and rapid population growth in Denver. The combination of reduction in county revenues and the press of ever more visitors is bringing several issues to a head that stand unresolved. Some of these issues have been discussed for as long as I can remember. Simply put, the conditions that enabled the close community of yesterday no longer exist. We must forge a new foundation of our community while working to protect the things that we love most. That happens best when everyone is engaged in the process.
Openness and transparency are the hallmarks of my governing philosophy. The more people involved in a decision, the more likely it is that the decision will be executed successfully. When it comes to the challenges that Clear Creek County is facing, execution is at the top of the list. Numerous studies are collecting dust on the shelves. I believe that this is because we have not been able to achieve a critical mass of buy-in from the many groups and leaders in Clear Creek. As county commissioner I will work to get as many people and groups as possible to rally behind a common goal of economic development that improves the lives of locals. Inclusion is about more than listening well. It is about going out into the community to seek input and encourage involvement. I already do this in my personal and professional life and will continue to do so as your county commissioner.
